SAINT JOHN CHURCH
Lutheran Church in Sam Houston Park where German immigrants laid the foundation stones.
This church, located in Sam Houston Park, was erected around 1891. White and puritanical, the charming Saint John's Church seems out of place in this skyscraper-filled downtown. Historically, it was German and Swiss immigrants who laid the foundation stones, in the purest Lutheran tradition, as evidenced by the neo-Gothic architecture. Masses remained in German until the 1930s! It was donated to the park in 1968, having been moved from its original address on Mangum Road.
