Historic African-American neighborhood with 22 shotgun houses, 10 for rent to artists and 12 for single mothers.
When gentrification serves the community. In the 1990s, this historic African-American neighborhood in the Third Ward began to attract developers who saw a good opportunity to make money given its proximity to Downtown. Locals risked being evicted and their homes razed. Three artists, including Rick Lowe, the current director, decided to set up this project to preserve the community. They bought 22 shotgun houses. After restoration, ten of them were rented out to artists.
