This university is well known in the French-speaking community of Texas. Three French missionary sisters were involved, somewhat unwillingly, in its founding. They were charged with fighting the yellow fever and cholera that plagued the region after the Civil War. The religious mission to which they were assigned was later transformed into a university campus. Today, it houses one of the most beautiful churches in the United States.
