Two lines serve Alpine: the Texas Eagle line, which connects Chicago and Los Angeles; and the Sunset Limited line, which connects New Orleans and Los Angeles. Both serve many nearby cities, including El Paso, Del Rio, San Antonio, Houston, Beaumont, and others. If you book in advance, you can find cheap tickets, and the trains are much more comfortable than Greyhound buses, with large seats and even cabins with beds for those traveling long distances.
