FORT LEATON STATE HISTORIC SITE
Fort built in 1848 by Ben Leaton with picnic area, worth a stop while visiting Big Bend National Park
This fort is not worth the detour, except for those who pass by on Route 170 and have time to stop for a while. It is also a convenient stop, especially for its picnic area. It was in 1848 that Ben Leaton decided to build an earthen fort here, in order to be able to monitor the exchanges between the Apache and Comanche Indians. Curiously, no historian is able to explain what this famous Ben Leaton was doing in the area, accompanied by some settlers.
