BIG BEND RANCH STATE PARK
Big Bend Ranch State Park where you can enjoy the South Texas scenery and Solitario Peak, activities, camping
The Big Bend Ranch State Park is much less known than its neighbor the Big Bend National Park, because it is much less spectacular, but it is nevertheless a very pleasant place to discover the landscapes of South Texas. It covers an area of 109,000 ha and its highest peak, Solitario Peak, rises to 1,459 m. Many activities can be practiced in the State Park: rafting, horseback riding, biking, 4x4, hiking,... The big difference is that here private ranches of fence occupy a part of the park. So the land is not entirely wild. You can meet cows there. If it is a longhorn, it is advised to stay away, as they can be aggressive. The lucky ones will see lynx or mountain lions. Wild boars and lizards are much more common. In terms of fauna and flora, we find here the same ecosystem as in its neighbor, the Big Bend National Park, linked to the Chihuahua desert.
Good news for camping enthusiasts, dozens of possibilities exist in the park. You just have to inform the park authorities of your presence and pay the fee for a site. The park offers camping sites accessible by car, others only on foot. Beware, some rough roads are not accessible except by 4x4. Otherwise, it is possible to sleep in the Sauceda Lodge Bunkhouse. There are only single beds.
