Visitor center for information on Big Bend National Park and backcountry camping permits
Practical information center named after local trees. A few million years ago, this area was a large mountain range. But even as the mountains rose, erosion eroded them. Later, the same phenomenon that raised the Rocky Mountains raised the present-day Santiago Mountains around you. In the hills across the road from the visitor center, this ancient rock is on display: the oldest rock in the park.
