CHISOS MOUNTAINS
Massif inviting to hikes to discover another facet of the Big Bend including Emory Peak Trail, Lost Mine Trail and The Window
The massif occupies around 8% of the park and can be visited in a day, giving you time to discover another facet of Big Bend. But if you want to discover it in depth, we recommend devoting at least an afternoon to hiking. The vegetation changes radically with altitude. The mountainsides turn green, the air is fresher than in the park's furnace, and the wildlife is more impressive. This is the land of pumas and bears (something to bear in mind on your walks). We recommend starting with a visit to the information center. Among the Chisos' most popular day hikes:
Emory Peak Trail, the park's highest point at 2,385 m. Once you've reached the top of Emory Peak, you'll enjoy a simply magical view of the Chihuahuan desert. The hike takes around 6 hours. The trail is very well cleared, so you won't necessarily need hiking boots - good sneakers will do. However, you will have to climb the last few metres.
Lost Mine Trail, or how a legend becomes a walk. A ghost mine is said to be located on this trek. It is said that the Chiso Apaches revolted against the Spaniards who tried to force them to work in this mine, and killed them.
The Window, a simple stroll down to this window on the desert: an opening between two mountains. Ideal for watching the sunset and for an easy hike with the kids.
