FATHOM FIVE NATIONAL MARINE PARK
A marine conservation area adored by divers with some twenty wrecks lying under the crystal clear waters of Lake Huron.
This is where the famous Niagara Escarpment ends, stretching from the Niagara Falls to Tobermory. Fathom Five Marine Park is Canada's most valued marine conservation area. About twenty wrecks lie under its crystal-clear waters and on its very varied underwater relief where we find dolomite rocks 420 million years old. This makes it a popular spot for freshwater divers from all over America. Whether you prefer freediving or scuba diving, there's something for you to spend exciting days. Those who prefer not to get wet will choose an interesting expedition aboard a glass-bottomed boat, anchored in the village of Tobermory. On the surface, the park looks just as attractive. Flowerpot Island, with its special geography and flora, is a photographer's delight. Overnight camping is available (camping permits must be purchased at the park's Visitor Centre in Tobermory). The experience is rustic (platform to pitch the tent, compost toilet, no electricity or running water) and as the island is isolated, you must bring everything you will need during your stay. You should also know that in case of bad weather, you may have to stay an extra day or two on the island. In short, be considerate if you choose camping, but you'll soon be rewarded with the sound of the lapping Georgian Bay waves.
