The National Historic Site overlooks the historic village of Placentia. This is the site of the ruins of Fort Royal, built by the French in the 17th century and renamed Castle Hill by the English, from which you can enjoy an exceptional panoramic view of Placentia and its bay. The visitor center presents the history of the site. You can climb Cannon Hill, where some remains of the fort still stand, and then head for Gaillardin, a redoubt built by the French.
