USS BOWFIN SUBMARINE MUSEUM & PARK
One of the few remaining World War II submarines, commissioned on December 7, 1945
The USS Bowfin (SS-287) is one of the few remaining World War II submarines. She was commissioned on December 7, 1942, exactly one year to the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and took many Japanese casualties during the war, earning her the nickname "Pearl Harbor Avenger." It also helped make the term Silent Service famous. From the bridge, you can access the cockpit and visit the 80 soldiers who lived there. A museum completes the visit through the exhibition of various objects related to submarines and the showing of an archive film where we see these war machines in action. A section of the museum is dedicated to the Cold War and nuclear submarines, as well as to the use of submarines today. On site, a monument honors the 52 submarines and some 3,600 U.S. Navy officers lost during World War II. A few meters away, the Regulus I missile, a nuclear-powered missile that sent 3,000 letters across the Atlantic, is displayed Free audio guides are available, and in French! Count 1 to 2 hours for the complete visit. The USS Bowfin and the museum are part of the sites included in the Pearl Harbor Passport which allows you to visit the different monuments in the same day. Be careful, bags are not allowed here either.
