A temple built by King Kamehameha to honor Lono, the god of agriculture and prosperity.
In front of the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel. Also visible from the pier. This heiau has been particularly well restored and is worth a visit. It is a temple built by King Kamehameha, who ruled Hawaii from 1813 to 1819, to honor Lono, the god of agriculture and prosperity. A native of the region, the king himself often came to worship at this heiau. The bird on the largest statue is a golden plover: it would have guided the first Polynesians who came to settle in Hawaii.
