VOLCANO ART CENTER GALLERY
Gallery featuring over 300 Hawaiian artists and photos of the latest Kilauea eruptions
This gallery, created by a non-profit organization, exhibits more than 300 Hawaiian artists. The building that houses the Volcano Art Center has a long history itself. It was the original location of the Volcano House Hotel (1877) which was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1921. Some of the original walls have been preserved, however, and can be easily seen in the gallery. Later, the building even housed a post office (see the mailbox at the end of the corridor), and the building itself was almost destroyed in the 1970s. It was artists who mobilized and restored it to make it a gallery to promote young talents. Also worth seeing is the photo exhibition on the last eruptions of Kilauea. Don't hesitate to visit the website to attend one of the many free events that vary throughout the year (dance, singing, exhibition...). The gallery regularly invites local artists (painters, sculptors, weavers...) to lead workshops for one or more sessions. Visitors are of course welcome to register and participate. Guided nature walks are also offered from the gallery to discover the different species of this particular volcanic environment. The art center's offices are located a few meters to the east, in Volcano Village, and are also home to artworks to be discovered on site.
