Built in 1934, it is the miraculous lighthouse of the 1960 Kilauea eruption that completely wiped out the village of Kapoho. The lava simply stopped at the foot of the building! According to legend, Pele (goddess of volcanoes) wanted to protect the fishermen by saving the lighthouse. However, the legend tells that Kumukahi had challenged Pele by refusing her participation in the royal games. Furious, she surrounded him with lava, forcing him to retreat to the easternmost point of the island, which grew larger as the flows continued.
