Dating back to the 1850 s, it was the second prison built in Lahaina. Its function was still the same: to put the sailors back on the right path, that is to say the missionaries. At the time of the visit, the main charges were found to be fornication, alcoholism and driving of drunk horses. Literally, "Hale Pa'ahao" means "stuck in the iron house," referring to the ball and chains of prisoners.
