Green valley overhung by the Iao Needle peak, former place of fighting, alii, members of the royal family are buried there
A pretty green valley overhung by the amazing peak, the "Iao Needle", result of the volcanic erosion during several thousands of years. The locals call it "Kukaemoku" because it would be the phallus of the god of the oceans! many alii (members of the royal family) have been buried in this valley. But it was above all the scene of historical battles. King Kamehameha I, the architect of the unification of the Hawaiian Islands, led a violent battle to conquer Maui in 1790. With his victory, he took possession of the island and became the first king of Hawaii in 1792. A well-maintained, marked trail offers a pleasant and easy walk. Along the way, there are many views of the river, the cliffs and the local plants. Count on 40 minutes maximum. Behind the final kiosk, in front of the Iao Needle, an unofficial trail leaves in the forest. It allows you to follow the ridge and cross the forest to a central viewpoint on the valley. You will then be surrounded by green and waterfalls, as if immersed in a movie set. Only a few helicopters loaded with visitors intermittently disturb this absolute calm. Count 2 hours round trip. Below, the river offers numerous swimming spots and waterfalls. You can go up the northern part of the river until you find a place that suits you. Bring a raincoat in addition to your bathing suit, the area is extremely rainy.
