Uninhabited and ultra protected island southwest of Maui, a target during WWII, to be seen from the beaches of Makena
It is an uninhabited island of 116 km², 10 km southwest of Maui, which can be seen from the beaches of Makena. Its arid climate has never allowed Hawaiians to live there permanently. With the entry of the United States into World War II in 1941, the population was permanently evacuated and the island became a target for bombing during U.S. Army training, which it remained until the early 1990s. Today it is forbidden for tourists to visit this highly protected island.
