This magnificent coconut grove of nearly 5 hectares was mainly intended to provide shade for the royal family.
Magnificent coconut grove of nearly 5 hectares. It was named "Kapuaiwa" in homage to King Kamehameha V, whose nickname it was. In the 1860s, he had 1,000 coconut trees planted on this beach, each of these trees representing a soldier in his powerful army. Beyond the symbolism, this mini forest was mainly intended to provide shade for the royal family, for whom this beach was reserved. Today, there are only a hundred or so coconut trees left, but the authorities are working to gradually replant them thanks to volunteers.
