Halawa Valley is where the oldest community on Molokai was established.
It was in this valley that the oldest community on Molokai was established in the 7th century. These Hawaiians, originally from the Marquesas Islands, lived from fishing and growing taro (the local potato) until the 1950s. But in 1946 and 1957, two huge tsunamis destroyed their homes and permanently impregnated their land with salt, making it unfit for cultivation. For the past twenty years, everything has been done to make the soil fertile again. A guided hike allows you to explore the valley.
