POLIAHU HEIAU

Important heiau with a nice view on the Wailua River and an explanatory sign at Wailua State Park.
Religious ceremonies were held in this heiau until the official Christianization of Hawaii in 1819. Nearby, there is a nice viewpoint on the Wailua River and an explanatory panel that evokes the importance of this heiau for the royalty. If the temples are still today only little developed or restored it is because it is only from the XXth century that the sites of the heiaus will be progressively rehabilitated and protected by the authorities. The only temples you will see in Hawaii are reconstructions.
