One of seven heiaus visible along the Wailua River, the easiest to access at Wailua State Park
It is one of the seven heiaus visible along the Wailua River and it is undoubtedly the easiest to access. Unfortunately, all that remains is a pile of stones, here and there, because at the time of the official evangelization of Hawaii, in 1819, King Kamehameha II had all the heiaus and idols of the archipelago destroyed in order to eradicate the ancestral Hawaiian pagan religion. Archaeologists have dated the construction of this temple to around 1300. Hikina A Ka La Heiau" means "sunrise" because the priests celebrated the dawn here.
