FORTRESS OF LOUISBOURG HISTORIC SITE
A stronghold to experience 18th century life at Louisbourg, the largest historical re-enactment in North America.
The Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site was one of the most important strongholds on the American continent and the capital of Île Royale (Cape Breton) when it belonged to France. Today, it is the largest and most spectacular historical reconstruction in North America. In order to better capture the atmosphere of 1744, the fortress was reconstructed outside of the actual town on this waterfront site. The figurants (French soldiers in blue, English in red) who evolve in the middle of the buildings of the XVIIIth century animate the fortress, making us relive its hours of glory. More than fifty houses are open to visitors, including the engineer's residence, the Gannes house, the Roches house and the Vallière house. They are furnished as in the 18th century. Don't miss the visit of the King's Bastion: the governor's residence with its many elegantly decorated rooms, the officers' quarters, the barracks, the prison and the chapel. At the guardhouse, there are drumming demonstrations prior to the firing of the cannon and rifle shooting. Several inns offer meals inspired by 18th century recipes. This is the case at the Hôtel de la Marine and at Grandchamp where you will eat in a relaxed atmosphere with, as only utensils, a large spoon and a knife to share with other guests!
Please note that cars are not allowed to enter the fortress. A shuttle bus takes you to the site from the visitor center.
Activities. Numerous activities are organized daily by Parks Canada (reduced program at the beginning and end of the season): guided tour (adapted tour available by cart for people with reduced mobility), geocaching game, musket, cannon or artillery shooting, folk dance for children, guided tour of the medicinal gardens, children's theater, history walk, etc. You can also discover the taste and aroma of Fortress Rum and the history of this sugar-based beverage (tasting included, of course!), attend a public chastisement or practice your dance steps for the grand ball. Several beaches are accessible from the fortress but are not supervised. In addition to this already busy program, there are various special events throughout the season (murder mystery evening, paranormal weekend, Canada Day, Celtic music show, camping initiation, etc.). In short, the possibilities are numerous and will please both young and old.
Lodging. To immerse yourself in 18th century life, why not spend a night on site, in the heart of the fortress? Two options are available for a memorable experience. The first, camping, to accommodate up to four people in a period tent already set up. In terms of equipment, the site provides floor mats, lanterns, cooking equipment, a propane stove and a campfire site. The second one, an inn, offers more comfort and can accommodate up to six people in the Rodrigue House. Rustic but well-equipped, it features period lanterns (no electricity required!), cooking equipment and a propane stove. These accommodations are available from June to September upon reservation and do not include the entrance to the historic site.
