GREEN GABLES HERITAGE SITE
A typical late Victorian farmhouse that can be visited in its entirety in Cavendish.
The novelist Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942, buried in Cavendish Cemetery), who was deeply attached to her island and the beauty of the Cavendish landscape, immortalized her Macneill cousins' farmhouse, not far from which she lived, as the setting for her famous novel Anne of GreenGables, one of the most popular children's stories in English literature, known worldwide and translated into more than twenty different languages.
Overlooking the rolling countryside, the English garden offers soft green lawns with clumps of bright flowers; below is the haunted forest. The famous house, which we like to photograph from all angles, was renovated in the late 1800s. It reflects not only the setting of the novel, but also a typical late Victorian farmhouse. It can be visited in its entirety, but it is not possible to enter every room. Upon entering (or exiting) the house, you can explore the various period outbuildings, faithfully reconstructed: barn, granary, wood shed. Follow the heroine, she will guide you... A must-see attraction on Prince Edward Island! On-site services: free parking, visitor center with exhibit hall, Haunted Forest Trail (0.9 km) and Balsam Hollow Trail (0.8 km), gift store.
