THE SPHERES - AMAZON HEADQUARTERS
Unmistakable, this giant sphere of green glass framed by its skyscrapers still under construction is Belltown's new dynamic hub on 6th Avenue. The online business giant invested $38 billion between 2010 and 2016 in Seattle, becoming the city's largest employer with 40,000 employees! And the sphere inaugurated in 2018 also has 40,000... plants! It is intended for the firm's employees who can come to relax with their noses in the flowers, work, drink coffee, enjoy the sun's rays... We are impressed by the tropical plant walls, light and humidity. The firm opened an Understory centre to do its own promotion, talk about the sphere, and visit its towers, which are also rich in facilities that produce green energy or optimize energy costs. If planting trees around the world and in Seattle is a laudable action, Jeff Bezos' multinational company has a record carbon footprint that is difficult to offset, due to its air freight, not to mention the packaging and boxes that do nothing to protect the environment. Giving yourself a beautiful ecological image is a real greenwashing operation, but it is nevertheless visually very spectacular! The massive influx of staff has also considerably boosted the area, which sees the opening of cafés and restaurants every week.
