WATERFRONT
Along Elliot Bay, cut off from the city by the Alaskan Way, the waterfront port area has more than 90 jetties (piers). The wooden warehouses have kept their wharf number but now house only recreational areas: excursions, fishing, seafood restaurants, museums, souvenir shops and beer bars. A little tune from Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco. Despite this, the wormwood pontoons and the unobstructed view of Puget Sound emanate an old-fashioned charm that is characteristic of this city that is proud and respectful of its past.
We will stroll towards the famous Ferris wheel, which is one of the city's tourist emblems. A complex of family attractions stands at its feet. You can also walk along the docks to the Seattle Aquarium in one direction (north), or to the ferry to the West Seattle district in the other direction (south).
Since 2014, however, one of Seattle's biggest projects is underway: passing the Alaskan Way 99 highway, which is now like a scar in the landscape underground, to create a real waterfront, pedestrian and green. From Pioneer Square to Belltown, this redesigned waterfront will be a true haven of peace with an unobstructed view of Elliott Bay. Of course, the district will be criss-crossed with bicycle paths, pedestrian walkways, green spaces and children's games. In short, a real relief for tourists and residents who have suffered for too long from the omnipresence of cars and pollution in the city centre. The work will be carried out from 2016 to 2020. In January 2019, the air highway was opened to pedestrians before it was demolished. Now it is time for the redevelopment work to be carried out over 2 km.
