MONS MEMORIAL MUSEUM
Collections of military history of the city reflecting on the links between civilian and military population in Mons
This 3,000m2 museum space, renovated in 2015, is located on the Machine à Eau site. It traces the singular history of the city of Mons from the Middle Ages to the two world wars. The Great War occupies a central place in the museum, with a double tour designed as a space for reflection and questioning. The permanent tour of the Mons Memorial Museum (MMM) plunges visitors into the daily lives of the men and women who lived through these tragic events. During the Great War, the Mons region was the scene of major events. In August 1914, British soldiers saw their first combat here. After more than four years of bloody warfare, it was also here that Commonwealth troops made their mark in the region, liberating the occupied population from the German yoke. Canadian soldier George Price lost his life on November 11, 1918 at 10:58 a.m., just before the Armistice, on the Chaussée de Mons. With its regular temporary exhibitions on military themes, the museum invites visitors to reflect on our society, combining history and memory. Through personal accounts (letters, notebooks and interviews), visitors are immersed in the daily lives of soldiers and civilians during the war. The objects on display, drawn from the town's military history collections, reflect on the links between civilian and military populations. The site regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, and also has a cafeteria and store.
