KHAMA RHINO SANCTUARY
Reserve home to the largest population of white rhino in Botswana and various other animals. Various organized activities.
This reserve is a favourite because it is home to the largest population of white rhinos in Botswana. It is home to about 30 white rhinos and a few black rhinos. The reserve opened its doors in 1993, on a former hunting site surrounding the Serwe Pan. The long term goal is the reintroduction in the rest of the country. The reserve is also home to elands, wildebeest, zebras, springboks and giraffes in a landscape close to that of the neighbouring Serwe Pan. Occasionally predators more discreet than lions manage to get under the fences of the reserve, such as cheetahs and hyenas. Covering 8,500 hectares, the reserve is managed by the town of Serowe and 2 villages: Page and Mabeleapudi. This project, partly funded by the European Union, plays a very active role in introducing environmental conservation, especially for schoolchildren. Schoolchildren come to be guided through the reserve and understand the situation of rhinos in Botswana. Finally, the reserve occasionally welcomes volunteers to participate in the work of the park. Several game drives are organized throughout the day. In low season, it is possible to reserve the time slot that suits you best. It is possible to use one's own car for the game-drive, subject to the assistance of a guide. There are also rhino and giraffe stalks, as well as walks and night-drives. It is possible to spend the night on site, in a campsite or in a chalet.
