MUSEO DE LA PLATA
Natural science museum, rich in historical anecdotes, featuring a collection of 15,000 objects donated by the explorer.
An imaginary journey through the evolution of the planet, its species and their formation. 23 rooms for this museum of natural sciences. But this museum is above all rich in historical anecdotes. Previously founded in Buenos Aires in 1872, it exhibited a collection of 15,000 objects donated by the Patagonian explorer Francisco "Perito" Moreno, director of the museum. In 1882, the provincial government ordered the transfer of the museum and its collections to the new capital of the province, La Plata. At the end of the Conquest of the Desert, Inacayal, a famous Tehuelche cacique, and twelve indigenous prisoners from his community were taken there to be exhibited. In 1887, five of them died in less than a month (including members of Inacayal's family), the causes of death could not be identified: no autopsy was performed. Inacayal ends his days as the museum's doorman. Argentines tend to glorify this story, reporting that thanks to the intervention of Francisco Moreno, the Tehuelche chief was spared from the military prison. However, the story seems more complex: his death, in 1888, was due to a fall down the stairs (official version of the museum), although many researchers and historians dispute this version. Indeed, some point to suicide (the man was tormented to see the "remains" of his loved ones displayed in the museum's showcases) or murder (numerous fractures on the skeleton attest that the man would have received several blows).
