STATUE OF KARAĐORĐE
Prominently located in the square, perched on a mound of earth, is the sculpture of the leader of the First Serbian Uprising of 1804. Enriched by these activities as a pig farmer, Karađorđe (George the Black) bought weapons from the Austrians stationed on the other side of the Sava River and organized the Serbian uprising against the Ottoman yoke. Legend has it that he gathered a militia of 3,000 men on this hill in Vračar. This served as an example to other Serbian towns in Choumadie, which followed the Belgraders throughout 1804.
