In the Dedinje district, just a stone's throw from the town center, the recently reopened estate of the
Karađorđević dynasty covers an area of 100 ha and consists of English gardens, two majestic buildings, two palaces: the Royal Palace (Kraljevski dvor) and the White Palace (Beli dvor), and the Royal Chapel dedicated to the Holy Apostle Andrew. This complex was erected in the second half of the 1920s by Yugoslav King Alexander I and served as the royal residence of the Karađorđević until 1941.
Built in a Serbo-Byzantine style, the royal palace is today the residence of Crown Prince Alexander II and his wife. You can visit the richly decorated marble interiors, library, salons and reception hall. From the palace, a breathtaking view unfolds over the hills of Topčider, Košutnjak and Avala. Erected in 1937, the White Palace, hidden in a magnificent forest, is remarkable for its architectural beauty. Its entrance is adorned with paintings by 17th-century French masters (Poussin and Millet in particular) and Sèvres porcelain can be seen in the rooms. The Louis XV-style petit and grand salons are decorated with Venetian chandeliers and paintings by Brueghel and Canaletto.
A visit to the royal complex is not to be missed! And if you're lucky, you might even meet the venerable Prince Alexander II and his wife, who occupy the premises and speak excellent French when meeting visitors.
