EXIT FESTIVAL
It is the cultural event of the year, the Balkan Woodstock! 190 000 people from all over Central Europe and beyond.
Born in 2000, it is the cultural event of the year, the Balkan Woodstock! 190 000 people come from all over Central Europe and elsewhere (30 000 foreigners, the majority coming from Great Britain), around and in the fortress of Petrovaradin, dancing on the best of the world scene in terms of rock, world music, all the electronic currents and the Balkan ethno. The setting is majestic: the medieval fortress overlooking the Danube, with no less than twenty-five stages - Afro-Cuban, reggae, progressive or Balkan Fusion, among others. A large stage welcomes 30,000 festival-goers, while more intimate stages are set up in the moat of the fortress. Fun for all tastes and sizes.
The story of Exit begins with the elections of September 2000 in Serbia. Students set up a festival to fight in their own way against Slobodan Milošević. The "master of Belgrade" gone, Exit will grow very quickly. The second year, it invests the fortress. The success is immediate. International stars, captivated by the public and the place, come. The list is long: Iggy Pop, Manu Chao, Faith No More, Carl Cox, The White Stripes, Garbage, Franz Ferdinand, Massive Attack, The Chemical Brothers, Patty Smith, Kraftwerk, Moby, The Prodigy, Placebo or Arcade Fire, Pulp, Jamiroquai, Portishead, Underworld, Groove Armada, Tiga in 2011. More than 600 concerts each time, a fantastic atmosphere, a very professional organization and a dream setting make Exit one of the major festivals in Europe, barely a decade after its creation. When the huge banner "State of Exit" is unfurled every second week of July, on the ramparts of the fortress, Novi Sad changes. The European youth takes over the city and the camping site set up for the occasion (Exit Village), on the other bank of the Danube (Oficirac beach), becomes the place of all meetings.
Do not miss the sunrise, from the top of Petrovaradin, just after the last concerts. A magical moment!
