NATIONAL THEATRE
On the other side of Slobode Square, built before 1839, in baroque style, it is the oldest building in this style in Serbia. According to local legend, a Hungarian aristocrat, Ignác Herteléndy, who was in love with an actress from Budapest, wanted to bring her to Veliki Bečkerek (the former name of Zrenjanin); she agreed on the condition that there would be a theater in the town. The aristocrat then had the attic converted into a theater to please her. It has three stages, and the dramatic hall is a classical wonder.
