CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERY
In 1956, the city of Zrenjanin founded an art colony in Ečka, a village near there. Ečka was born at a time when the art colonies in Vojvodina (Senta, Bačka Topola, Bečej, Kikinda, Ruma, Novi Kneževac) had already gained some experience. Thus, in 1958, the Contemporary Gallery of the Colony was founded to take care of the works of art created in Ečka, as well as to organize meetings of artists on site. Since then, the founding artists of the colony, Zoran Petrović, Aleksandar Zarin, Tivadar Vanjek, Vasa Pomorišac, Stojan Trumić, Stevan Dukić, Živojin Turinski, and Zdravko Mandic, became famous far beyond the region and also had a significant influence on the artistic life of the city. However, it was not until 1964 that the contemporary gallery that we know today opened in Zrenjanin.
In 2006, on the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the settlement, the concept of traditional painting gatherings changed when, in keeping with the pluralism and interdisciplinarity already present in contemporary art, Ečka artists opened up to different forms of contemporary artistic expression. We highly recommend visiting the museum that traces this unique artistic journey in Serbia, with interesting, sometimes confusing temporary exhibitions, following the themes developed in collective by the colony's working groups.
