TRAJAN BRIDGE
Four kilometers downstream, you can see the remains of the first pier of the bridge that crossed the Danube in the 2nd century. Built by the Syrian architect Apolodor Damask, the Trajan Bridge, also called the Iron Gates Bridge, was 1,127 meters long, an absolute record at the time. Intended to enable the conquest of Dacia, today's Romania (Drobeta-Turnu Severin), the bridge rests on 20 pillars in the water and four on the banks. Trajan's successor, Hadrian, ordered the destruction of the bridge to stop the barbarians.
