The history of Senjski Rudnik begins with the discovery of coal in 1853. This small mining settlement is considered to be the origin of Serbian industrialization because coal was mainly used for the needs of the Topolivnica in Kragujevac, one of the first Serbian factories. The town became a real mining town, before declining after the Second World War. Today the town's museum recreates this industrial past and houses, among other things, an old steam locomotive still in working order.
