NATIONAL ART GALLERY
Created in 1979, this institution (Galeria Kombëtare e Kosovës, Nacionalna galerija Kosova) is the main place for the dissemination of contemporary art in Kosovo. It is housed in an unattractive building, a former military barracks (1935) which later served as the province's "national" library. Throughout the year, the gallery hosts new exhibitions of works competing for various prizes. Three events are particularly popular. From September to October, the works competing for the international photography competition "Gjon Mili" are on display. Photographers from all over the world take part in this prize named after the American photographer Gjon Mili (1904-1984) from Korça, Albania, who is famous for his stroboscopic photos and portraits of jazzmen and celebrities (Brigitte Bardot, Pablo Picasso, Alfred Hitchcock...). From October to November, the gallery hosts the international "Muslim Mulliqi" prize. Dedicated to visual arts, it is the most prestigious competition and the most awaited exhibition. Expressionist and impressionist painter from Gjakova/Đakovica (87 km southwest of Pristina), Muslim Mulliqi (1934-1998) was one of the greatest contemporary artists in Kosovo. Some of his paintings are on permanent display here. Finally, from November to December, young Kosovar artists of all disciplines are exhibited in the framework of the Artists of Tomorrow competition.
