GERMIA PARK
This park (Parku i Gërmisë, Park Grmija) is part of a 62 km2 protected area, the Gërmia Natural Park, created in 1987. This is where the inhabitants of Pristina come to get some fresh air and picnic whenever they can. The 12 ha of the most developed part of the park have been redeveloped with EU support. The maintenance has since left something to be desired. But it is here that sports facilities, children's playgrounds, picnic areas, an artificial lake for swimming and two restaurants (Vila Gërmia is the best) are concentrated. In the wild part, there are many trails that are particularly popular with hikers and mountain bikers (bikes can be rented at the entrance in season). As the summit of the park reaches 1,050 m (Mount Butos), a small winter sports resort had begun to be installed. However, the project was cut short by the 1998-1999 war, and the ski lift towers that have been erected here and there have never seen a skier. The protected area is 75% forested, mainly with oak, but also with Balkan beech and hornbeam. There are 12 species of reptiles and amphibians (wall lizard, Hermann's turtle, spotted salamander, green tree frog, etc.), 19 species of mammals (hedgehog, red squirrel, etc.) and 32 species of birds, including the occasional golden eagle. The park is also home to many kinds of insects, fungi and plants, including four endemic species and a very rare orchid, the purple orchid.
