PEJA/PEĆ MUSEUM
Founded in 1983, the city's only museum (Muzeu i Pejës, Muzej u Peći) is especially noteworthy for the house that houses it: the konak of Tahir Bey (Konaku i Tahir Beut, Konak Tahir-bega), a beautiful corbelled Ottoman building constructed for a local dignitary in the second half of the 18th century. It is characterized by its çardak, a corbelled veranda above the entrance, and by its vast divanhane, a reception room that extends into the veranda. Initially located in the center, between the municipal building and the post office, the konak was dismantled and reassembled in its current location in 1960. The first floor and the courtyard house a small collection of archaeological finds from the region: Roman funerary stelae from the 2nd century, fragments of Bronze Age ceramics, Byzantine, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian coins. The ethnographic collection includes about 100 objects, mainly from the 19th century: tools, silverware, kitchen utensils, weapons, traditional costumes, local musical instruments such as the Dukagjin qifteli (a small two-stringed lute), small objects and jewelry with filigree. Notice especially the superb lounge which was reserved for the men (carved ceiling, benches covered with red kilims). On the square, in front of the museum, was installed in 2008 the statue of the Albanian nationalist and founder of the Peja League, Haxhi Zeka (1832-1902).
