HAXHI ZEKA MILL
This mill (Mulliri i Haxhi Zekës, Mlin Hadži Zeke) was built on the bank of a small tributary of the Pećka Bistrica in the 1860s. It belonged to the wealthy landowner and founder of the Peja League, Haxhi Zeka (1832-1902), who also owned a fortified house nearby, the Haxhi Zeka kula. Originally powered by a paddle wheel, the mill was equipped with an electric motor installed by Austro-Hungarian engineers and technicians. It became the first automated mill in Kosovo. Three millstones were used to grind grain (wheat, corn...) to obtain flour. The production was enough to meet the needs of the inhabitants of the city and the surrounding villages. A set of six buildings completed the complex which, after the assassination of Haxhi Zeka, remained the property of the Zeka family until its purchase by the Serbian Republic in 1997. This complex, built mainly of wood and lime plastered cob, was burned by Serbian nationalists in 1999. It was rebuilt almost identically in two phases between 2004 and 2016. Standing on two levels, as opposed to the original three, the mill now houses a small information center on the flora and fauna of the Kosovo mountains. Within the complex, the former ambar (corncrib) of the Zeka family houses a group of artisans who sell qeleshe (traditional white headdresses of Albanian mountain people), leather goods and filigree jewelry.
