JAMA MASJID
Monument celebrating the victory over the Vijayanagar at the Battle of Talikota in 1565 and featuring a domed prayer hall
The Jama Masjid was symbolically the center of the city during the rule of the Nizam of Hyderabad over Bijapur in the 19th century. Commissioned by Ali Adil Shah, to whom Bijapur also owes the construction of its wall and its complex water supply system, this monument celebrates the victory over the Vijayanagar at the battle of Talikota in 1565. Topped by its main dome, the prayer hall is also decorated with 33 other small domes. On the marble floor are inlaid 2,250 rectangles where as many devotees can come to pray.
