Nelakondapalli is a historical site surrounded by a mud wall that covers nearly 4 km². Excavations have uncovered brick foundations of the period: viharas, wells, cisterns, a Mahastupa, terracotta statues, a bronze statue of Buddha, a stupa carved in limestone, and other artifacts dating from the 3rd and 4th centuries A.D. These discoveries have allowed historians to assert that the area was a Buddhist center of primary importance.
