AIRAVATESVARA TEMPLE
Temple dedicated to Shiva offering a complex with a sacred pool connected to the Cauvery river and a small museum to the right of the entrance
Built by Rajaraja Chola II in the 12th century, this temple is dedicated to Shiva. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with Thanjavur's Brihadeeswara temple and Gangaikonda-Cholisvaram. This magnificent complex of Dravidian architecture is relatively well preserved. The complex has a theertham (sacred pool) connected to the Cauvery river. A small museum is located to the right of the entrance, featuring fine sculptures and a few murals from the Chola period.

Des sculptures très fines ornent le bâtiment. Certaines ont encore des traces des peintures originales alors que d'autres sont toujours vénérées.
