GANGAIKONDA-CHOLISVARAM
Temple dominating the surrounding landscape and displaying beautiful sculptures, including a Ganesh dance and a Rajendra piece
The Chola king Raja Raja's son, Rajendra Chola, built this temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram on the model of Thanjavur's Brihadeeswara temple, after his victory over the kingdoms in the Ganges region. Imposing, it dominates the surrounding landscape. In addition to the large Nandi (bull), there are some fine sculptures, including a Ganesh dance, and a stunning piece depicting Rajendra I crowned by Shiva and Parvati. The temple resumed its religious activity in 2017. To mark the occasion, a large gold-covered pillar was placed next to the Nandi.
