ST STEPHEN'S CHURCH
The oldest church in the Nilgiris, containing an imposing painting of the Last Supper and stained glass windows showing the crucifixion of Jesus
This church is considered the oldest church in the Nilgiris. Its construction began in April 1829 and it was consecrated on December 5, 1830. The main beam of the church and the frame are from Tipu Sultan's palace in Srirangapatnam (Karnataka), taken away after his defeat by the British in the Mysore War. The church contains an impressive painting of the Last Supper as well as stained glass windows depicting the crucifixion of Jesus. The nearby cemetery houses the grave of John Sullivan, the founder of Ooty.
