MERCADO HIDALGO
Guanajuato market with colorful stalls in a building built in the late nineteenth century by engineer Ernesto Brunel
Originally conceived as a railway station by engineer Ernesto Brunel in the late 19th century, this immense edifice has been transformed into a marketplace, with an imposing ashlar gate and a metal structure reminiscent of European railway stations. Gustave Eiffel himself designed the clock tower. Inaugurated in 1910 by Porfirio Díaz to mark the centenary of independence, this historic building is a magnificent example of the architecture of the time. Don't miss the chance to sample local specialties, including alfeñiques and charamuscas.
