The current Government Palace was built in 1770 to accommodate the city's authorities (corregidores), and at the same time served as a royal prison. It was in this house that the conspiracy meetings that led to the war of independence took place: the corregidor Miguel Domínguez Alemán and his wife Doña Josefa Ortíz de Domínguez began by organizing literary vigils attended by Ignacio Allende, Juan Aldama and Miguel Hidalgo. It was during one of these vigils that the date of the uprising was to be decided (December 12, 1810, the day of the Virgin of Guadalupe), although in fact the revolt would occur long before, since the viceroy soon learned of the conspiracy and decided to have all these beautiful people killed. It was finally thanks to Doña Josefa Ortíz de Domínguez that the conspirators, for a few more weeks or months, were able to save their lives...
