MUSEO AMPARO
Museum whose idea is that art and culture are fundamental for a society to know, strengthen and value itself.
The history of the building goes back to the 16th century, when it was used as a hospital, and then for other functions until 1871. In 1979, Don Manuel Espinosa Yglesias created the Amparo Foundation in memory of his wife. From this foundation the Amparo Museum was created and inaugurated in February 1991 with the motto: "Encounter with our roots". The main idea of the museum is that art and culture are fundamental for a society to know, strengthen and value itself. This beautiful image has given birth to one of the most important private Mexican museums in the country, completely renovated and remodeled in 2010: what a surprise to pass its stone facade to fall into a decor worthy of the white-cube of the 80's and 90's, before finally entering old rooms with wooden floors and beams, which are reached by balconies overlooking typical colonial patios.... The Amparo Museum has a permanent collection of more than 2,000 pieces of pre-Hispanic art from different parts of the Mexican Republic. There is also a very interesting map of the country where you can easily locate the main archaeological sites. A gigantic visual timeline also allows us to compare the main aesthetic productions of the five continents. The other major part of the visit concerns an important collection of works and furniture from the colonial period(Arte Virreinal), with an extension to the 19th century.
