LA DÉFENSE
Business district home to one of the world's leading contemporary art museums, recounting 50 years of architectural history
La Défense is a traffic circle in the continuation of a major urban axis, known as the "historic axis": it starts at the Louvre, runs up the Champs-Elysées to the Arc de Triomphe, and then descends to the Seine through the Porte Maillot and across the town of Neuilly. This axis, initiated by Le Nôtre under Louis XIV, has become emblematic of the urban organization of western Paris. In 1958, it was decided to create a world-class business center: the La Défense district was born. Among the architectural jewels, the CNIT bears witness to its beginnings. Its vaulted roof rises from the esplanade, spanning 218m and reaching a maximum height of 50m. The Grande Arche is the symbol of the end of the 20th century. It spans the main thoroughfare with a slightly offset façade. Since it was first built, La Défense has undergone constant transformation and added new functions. The 110,000 m² shopping center is one of the largest in the Paris region. The vast esplanade is home to the world's largest open-air museum of contemporary art, featuring 60 monumental sculptures by artists such as Calder, Miró, César and Agam. A visit to the Musée de la Défense, which traces 50 years of architectural history in Europe's leading business district, is a must. The most daring architectural feats are the skyscrapers. The 220-metre-high Hekla Tower, for example, towers close to the clouds.
