DOWA RAJAMAHA VIHARAYA
The Dhowa Rock Temple is an ancient Buddhist cave temple famous for its large 11-metre Buddha carved in granite. This sculpture has remained unfinished. The temple is believed to have been built in the 1st century BC by King Valagamba of Anuradhapura. A small stupa is located on top of the rock formation. It contains many frescoes and statues. The tunnel would be 11 km long and would connect the Ravana Maha Viharaya of Ella and the Bogoda Wodden Bridge. One of the young monks of the place will be able to guide you in your visit (any donation is welcome).
