Once numbering 31 (the first was built in 1883), these "elevators" were essential for people living on the sloping cerros to get to the center of town. They are in fact funiculars, as they move along rails laid at an angle, with the exception of the Polanco elevator, which moves vertically. Today, 12 elevators have been destroyed, 7 are still operational (the number varies from 5 to 8 every two months), and the others are either in ruins or being restored.
